Afia

Programs | Content Development & Trainer

Afia first came into the reproductive justice movement during the beginning stages of her career in public health 6 years ago. Her role as a health promoter at the time with the NYC Health Department exposed her to the many factors affecting underserved women from receiving the proper medical services they needed when it came to women/maternal health. The work became personal for her when a family member was pregnant with their first child and she saw first-hand how navigating the healthcare system for P.O.C can be overwhelming and scary during a time in one’s life where joy should supersede fear. After this experience, she trained to become a doula and gained certification to be a lactation counselor. Today, Afia continues to serve mother’s as a community doula in Brooklyn, NY and serves as a mentor to women who aspire to become birth workers.
